How to clean out a house after a death

Emptying the home of someone you loved is hard, and it rarely has to happen in a weekend. Here is an order of work that keeps the important things safe and leaves the heavy lifting to others.

When a parent or relative dies, the house they leave behind can feel like a second loss to work through. It is full of their things, decisions pile up, and often the family lives in other cities. There is no right speed for this, but there is an order that makes it easier: first protect what cannot be replaced, then decide what the family keeps, and only then clear what is left.

First: find the papers

Before anything leaves the house, look for documents. Wills, deeds, titles, insurance policies, bank and retirement statements, tax returns, and any letters from an attorney or a financial adviser. Check desks and filing cabinets, but also kitchen drawers, closet shelves, books and the pockets of coats. People keep important papers in surprising places.

If an estate is being settled, the person handling it may need to approve what is sold, given away or discarded. When in doubt, ask them or the estate's attorney before anything goes. This article is not legal advice, and every family's situation is different.

Second: let the family choose

Give each family member a way to say what they would like to keep, even if they cannot come in person. A shared list with photos works well: one picture per room or per piece, and a name beside anything someone wants. Photos, letters, jewelry, recipes, tools and small things with a story are usually what matters most, and they are easy to miss in a full house.

Mark what stays clearly. Colored tape or sticky notes on furniture, and labeled boxes for small items, set in one room that nobody clears. That way, when help arrives, there is no question about what goes.

It helps to give the family a deadline for the keep list as well, a few weeks rather than a few days, and to agree that anything nobody names by then can go. That one decision prevents most of the arguments that come later, and it lets the family grieve without the house standing in the middle of everything.

Third: decide what might be sold or given

Some families hold an estate sale, sell a few valuable pieces, or give furniture to friends, neighbors or a charity of their choosing. That is worth doing for things in good condition, and it can take time to arrange. Set a date by which anything unclaimed will be cleared, so the house does not stay full for months.

Fourth: clear the rest

What is left after the family has chosen is the part estate cleanout services are for. A crew carries out the remaining furniture, mattresses, appliances, boxes and household items from every room, basement and garage included, loads them and hauls them away. The family does not have to lift anything or rent a truck.

With Ace Junk Removal, you or someone you trust shows us what stays, and we clear the rest room by room at a pace that works for the family. You get the price from photos of the house before we start, and it is agreed before anything is loaded. Hazardous materials, like old paint, chemicals and fuel, are set aside for the family to handle, because we do not haul them.

If you live out of town

Many families handling a house in North Atlanta live elsewhere. The order above still works from a distance: a neighbor or friend can show the crew what stays, the keep list can be shared by photos within the family, and the house can be cleared without anyone flying in for a week of lifting.

Be gentle with the timeline

Some families clear a house in a month; others wait a year. Unless a sale or a lease sets the date, take the time you need for the first two steps. The last step, clearing what is left, is the part you can hand to someone else.
